Microplate Readers

Microplate readers are designed to scan, analyze and obtain numerical results from chemical reactions conducted in microplates. Microplate readers include devices for use in multi-detection, absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence measuring applications. Microplate readers also include microplate scanners or readers for analyzing microarrays and cell arrays.

Microplate readers are configured for slides, Petri dishes, cuvettes, well-scanning assays, and other specialty laboratory plates. A luminescence microplate reader is used to detect the emission of light in a chemical or biological specimen. Luminescence microplate readers, or luminometers, can detect and identify light emission through a variety of methods, including photoluminescence; thermoluminescence, which is light emission caused by application of heat; cathodoluminescence, which is light emission caused by the use of an electron beam; or triboluminescence, which is light emission triggered by mechanical energy such as friction. An absorbance luminometer uses light to measure the optical density of a liquid. A fluorescence microplate reader also detects the emission of light, but is differentiated by the type of light it detects. Fluorescence is also known as cold light, or light that does not produce heat. Molecules that fluoresce are called fluorophores and are useful in DNA sequencing and synthesis.

Multi-detection microplate readers provide multiple analyses of substances and chemical reactions, and often come with a variety of ports for different assays, cuvettes, and microplates or microarrays. A multi-detection microplate reader can measure absorbance, fluorescence intensity, and luminescence. Suppliers of multi-detection microplate readers meet various quality standards and serve many different industries.

Microplate readers are typically differentiated by the types of assays or substances to be analyzed. A microplate reader supplier may offer microplate readers than can handle a wide variety of assay types, or may provide only specific devices for analysis of particular compounds. Many microplate readers will handle multiple substances, such as immunoassays, protein and nucleic acid assays, and enzyme assays.
